Research

My focus is on identifying evidence-based practices for helping people with severe mental illness achieve full integration into the community. In addition to studies examining the effectiveness of various psychiatric rehabilitation practices, including supported employment and assertive community treatment, I have also concentrated on developing "fidelity scales," which are standardized methods for assessing how well programs are implemented.

I am also interested in policy issues promoting and/or interfering with the provision of effective services. My research typically involves working as part of a research team in which students are active participants. During my career, I have collaborated with students on over 75 journal articles and book chapters. Among my collaborators at other institutions are researchers from Dartmouth Medical School, Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the ACT Center of Indiana, Australia, Japan, and the Netherlands. Through such collaborations, students have had opportunities to work with leading researchers in psychiatric rehabilitation from around the world.

My current research includes two national multi-site studies. The first is a randomized study evaluating supported employment for Social Security Disability Insurance beneficiaries with psychiatric disabilities.

The research is clear that people who receive disability benefits are fearful about losing them, even though they are often eager to return to work. This study is being conducted in Indianapolis and 21 other cities and is examining whether supported employment in combination with high quality mental health treatment can help beneficiaries achieve employment and other valued outcomes. Two CRP students are currently employed on this project as research assistants.

My primary role in this project concerns quality management, specifically, assuring implementation of supported employment. The second national study is examining factors influencing successful implementation of 5 different evidence-based practices. This study examined a 2-year period of implementation of new programs in 53 mental health centers in 8 states. The study has received extensive national and international attention for helping to identify factors influencing fidelity of implementation. Four CRP students participated in this project and are collaborating on publications from this project.

Other areas of research include electronic decision support systems for medication management and identifying predictors of job tenure for individuals in supported employment. These two projects have involved two CRP students each.

Students working with me have been creative in identifying independent areas of research. I have been fortunate to be stimulated and challenged by great students throughout my career.
