N. Douglas Lees, Ph.D.Associate Dean for Planning & Finance, School of Science
My responsibilities in Planning involve working with the Dean on the allocation of personnel lines, space renovation and repurposing, and the design of new space.
In Finance, probably the most important role I play is in working with the Dean in budgeting for the School which includes establishing department budgets, working with chairs on setting salaries for new hires and in negotiating start-up packages and in establishing and managing the overall School budget.
Because there is virtually nothing we do that does not require resources of some type, I am frequently at the table for discussions on scholarships, research and graduate support, opportunity hires, School policies, personnel matters, academic programs and courses, special requests, etc.
1973 Ph.D. Biological Sciences, Northwestern University
1967 B.A. Biology, Providence College
In my early years, my laboratory research focused on the yeast sterol biosynthetic pathway and its end product sterol, ergosterol, each of which represent major targets for antifungal drugs.
More recently, my interests have been directed at higher education change and how that impacts the work of department leadership.
