There are many opportunities to learn from your fellow students—and to teach them, too!
Biology Structured Learning Assistance
Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) is an exciting and unique program that combines the idea of “what to learn” with “how to learn” through weekly sessions led by a fellow student who has already demonstrated the ability to perform well in class.
While lectures and exams are given by faculty, every week you’ll also take part in a 75-minute recitation led by a student mentor.
During the recitations, mentors help you implement study skills that allow you to master the course content and form study teams. You’ll acquire knowledge and skills and develop characteristics necessary for future academic success.
Peer Led Team Learning in Chemistry
When you register for a C105 workshop (or Peer Led Team Learning) you’ll participate in a two-hour active learning experience.
During the workshop, a peer leader will guide you through exercises where you’ll work with your fellow students to solve problems and to reveal where difficult or obscure steps might be, allowing you to cooperatively progress through the learning session.
Chemistry content, communication skills, and good teamwork practices are emphasized and you will be expected to be an active participant.
Our research has shown that students participating in a PLTL workshop have a 60% increase in receiving a C or better.
Math Assistance Center and MAC Stat
The Math Assistance Center (MAC) offers tutoring and peer mentoring from fellow students to anyone in a mathematics course. It is located in Taylor Hall (UC B001).
Likewise, the MAC Stat, which is a service of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and University College, offers tutoring and peer mentoring to any statistics student. It is located in University Library (UL 2135D).
Psychology/Neuroscience Peer Advising
Psychology and neuroscience peer advisors can give you a student’s perspective and advice on academic planning, career development, and experiential learning opportunities.
If you are a junior or senior majoring in psychology, you can apply to become a peer advisor. In addition to working with students, you’ll participate in a weekly seminar.
