Math alumnus credits the exposure he received at the School of Science for helping him daily

Mark Mueller | Alumni | Mathematical Sciences

INDIANAPOLIS—Mark Mueller, who received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in December 2020, is working as a compensation analyst at Heartland Dental.

Check out his video to learn more about what being a compensation analyst entails and how his time at the School of Science helped prepare him for his future. Plus, Mark shares some advice for current science students.

Mark Mueller, who received his Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics in December 2020, is now working as a compensation analyst at Heartland Dental.

Description of the video:

Right now, I am a compensation analyst for heartland dental. So what I do is I'm kind of part of the support office. H-R really. I help kind of decide how much certain position should get paid. So, for example, I might have an office reach out and say that hey we have a bunch of hygienists who are quitting on us, is there a reason? I'll look into it do some research do a bunch of market research to see are we paying them enough, we giving them enough bonuses, try to figure out why we're not retaining employees and stuff like that. The biggest thing is just exposure. I really believe all the exposure to, especially to applied statistics because I deal with numbers all day, it really helped exposes me to different situations so when I get, find the problem, I don't ask for help as much as I should I like but I know what resources to kind of help me figure it out if that makes sense. So the school of science school really kinda helped expose me to different situations so I know how to problem solve better then I would otherwise which helps me a bunch. Current students I would probably say keep your head up and remember your goals as it's super easy to kind of get lost, I know I definitely got lost several times so I would say just try remember what your end game is and try to keep your head up. Stuff happens life happens just keep pushing through.

Mark credits Jeff Watt, Ph.D., and Ben Boukai Ph.D., for helping him along the way.

“Dr. Watt was my calculus teacher for my first three semesters, and he was just such an outgoing guy. When my academic advisor left, he took over for a semester, and he helped me figure out where I’m going,” said Mueller. “Dr. Boukai helped me because I love numbers, but he had an emphasis on explaining the numbers. That’s really what helped me, especially in my job. I explain what the numbers mean to those who don't quite understand it or see it all the time. Dr. Boukai helped me out with that.”
