Bachelor of Science in Geology

This major places an emphasis on science and mathematics course and  is The Bachelor of Science program is designed for those interested in a professional career in geology. This major is designed to prepare students for entry level positions in local, state, federal government and industry and preparation for graduate programs.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) for BA and BS in Geology

  • Solve earth science problems using the scientific method and critical thinking.
  • Describe spatial and temporal variations in Earth processes through modeling, mapping, observation and measurement.
  • Understand the evolution of physical Earth and life as reflected in the geologic time scale.
  • Understand the structural and chemical controls on the physical properties and behavior of Earth materials.
  • Evaluate how physical, chemical and biological cycles are integrated into Earth systems from the local to global scale.
  • Understand how events of the geologic past control the current distribution of resources.
  • Assess the impact of physical and chemical cycles on human health and welfare.
  • Evaluate impacts and potential mitigation strategies for natural hazards, resource utilization, climate and environmental change.
  • Demonstrate competence in communicating Earth science problems to a broad audience through written, oral and visual means.
  • Understand the interdependence of the diverse sub-disciplines of Earth science.

Capstone Experience

Students will apply what they have learned in a 4-6 week geology field camp experience. In this course, students will apply classroom  and laboratory knowledge  to solve geologic problems in a regional location. Past field camps have been conducted in the San Bernadino Mountains of California and in Montana.


An exciting feature of the geology degree programs is undergraduate research. Research is not limited to the laboratory and often includes learning opportunities in the field. Students who participate in undergraduate research receive financial support and an opportunity to work directly with world-renowned faculty in a laboratory environment (as early as the freshman year). Research students benefit from personal attention and excellent academic and career advising.

Undergraduate student's typically present their research by giving a oral presentation or a scientific poster at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, North-Central Geological Society of America meeting, or meetings of Indiana University researchers, profesional geologists, or environmental consultants and regulators.
