Partha Basu, Ph.D.

Before joining the IUPUI School of Science, Basu spent the last 22 years in education, research, service and administration at University of Arizona, University of Pittsburgh and, Duquesne University. Additionally, he worked with nonprofit organizations such as the Society for the Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh, in a variety of roles including serving as Chair of grants committees.

With many diverse experiences in academic mentorship, including advising seven Ph.D. students and seven post-doctoral associates as well as mentoring several undergraduate and high school students, Basu hopes to help his students' and colleagues' reach their potential while meeting the School's strategic goals.

"As the Chair of Chemistry & Chemical Biology I wish to involve, encourage and mentor the next generation of citizenry and help colleagues achieve their goals," Basu said. "With my experience I hope to play a critical role in education and securing research funding."

Education

  • Basu earned his Ph.D. in chemistry--specializing in aspects of transition metal chemistry of oximes and related species--from the Jadavpur University in 1991
  • Completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Arizona and the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science.
  • His experience as a professor began at Duquesne University and he later became a full professor at Duquesne University in 2010, and an endowed Chair of Scholarly Excellence in 2015. 

Research

His research has been supported by a number of grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF) and Department of Education (DOE), with the NIH continuously supporting his research since 2000. Basu also holds three patents and has two additional patents pending.

With more than 100 publications, Basu's research has encompassed areas such as inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry. His research has been supported by a number of grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF) and Department of Education (DOE), with the NIH continuously supporting his research since 2000. Basu also holds three patents and has two additional patents pending.
