Gender Equality Expert Named New Leader of Department of Psychology at IUPUI
The School of Science at IUPUI has named Margaret “Peggy” Stockdale, Ph.D., chair and professor of the Department of Psychology. She most recently served as a psychology professor, program director of applied psychology and chair of the Department of Linguistics at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., where she worked for the past 22 years.
Stockdale is a leading expert in employment justice and gender issues in the workplace, primarily sex discrimination and sexual harassment. She is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and has authored or edited five books and more than three dozen, peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. As an applied psychology consultant, she has served as an expert witness for employment discrimination cases.
She looks forward to joining a department with a well-established reputation in both industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology and the health sciences, especially in behavioral neuroscience, the psychobiology of addictions and the clinical psychology fields of health psychology and psychiatric rehabilitation.
“Situated on the life-health sciences campus, the Department of Psychology at IUPUI has taken advantage of the unique opportunities for interdisciplinary research,” Stockdale said. “The health science focus and collaborative efforts with organizations such as the IU School of Medicine, the Stark Neuroscience Research Institute and the Roudebush VA Medical Center speak to national priorities and position the department to attract significant resources, funding and high-quality faculty and students.”
She also said she is “excited to expand the strong reputation the department has built as an undergraduate education model.”
“Dr. Stockdale will bring dynamic leadership, and her outstanding research program will add an exciting dimension to the highly regarded Department of Psychology at IUPUI,” said Simon Rhodes, dean of the School of Science. “She has a long history of successful collaborations in her research, and she brings a fresh perspective that will benefit our students, faculty, and the entire university.”
Stockdale served as director for Applied Research Consultants, a unique training program for graduate students that offers state-of-the-art research and consulting services to local, regional and national organizations. She hopes to leverage her experience and the department’s strengths to develop partnerships with Indianapolis-area businesses and organizations that would expand opportunities for students and faculty, she said.
Stockdale earned her Ph.D. and master’s degree in industrial and organizational psychology from Kansas State University. She also has a master’s of legal studies (MLS) degree from SIU-Carbondale.
